Deciduous Trees

Deciduous Trees

Meaningful Companionship

Deciduous trees are major climate conditioners for the desert garden environment. In proximity to the home, they can be used to mollify the high temperatures of summer, and because they drop their leaves in the fall, unlike evergreens, deciduous trees will allow sunlight and warmth to reach us during the cold winter months.

In the spring, flowering deciduous trees such as apples, plums, cherries, and the redbud, act as heralds of the coming season. They wake us from our indoor winter hibernation with such incredibly beautiful displays of color.

During the summer when temperatures are at their highest, deciduous trees can also provide a cooling screen for flowering shrubs, perennials and annuals that would otherwise bake in the full desert sun.

In the fall, that nostalgic feeling we get when the pumpkins break from the vine, and the leaves of the trees turn so many shades of autumn, we understand how important trees are, how much they contribute to our sense of belonging, and what players they are in our experience of pure, natural beauty.
