About Us

Why Dry Creek?

We wanted to create a garden nursery that we ourselves would want to find, a dream nursery built upon the principles of common sense, a place of healthy, well tended plants that excite the mind, nourish the heart and entertain a very particular gardening niche.

Common Sense Gardening

Nancy and John StricklandSome of our customers ask what we mean by "common sense" gardening. Simply stated, the semi-arid bioregions we live in are quite unique, and experience soon teaches that not all plants are suited to live here, at least not without costly and artificial conditions. This insight applies to both the alpine settings of the Northern Sierra and to the sometimes extremely hot and dry conditions of the high desert.

But, we do not consider the uniqueness of our region's altitude and aridity drawbacks. Not at all.  Instead we view them as a decipherable set of requirements that translates into an artistic horticultural challenge.  Our mission: to offer an exciting array of beautiful, well tended plants that are truly suited to the valleys, hillsides and city backyards of the Truckee River, the Yuba River, the Carson River, the Walker River, and all the incredibly beautiful communities of Nevada and Northern California.

As the list of watersheds suggests, common sense gardening is about using water wisely. It is a fact that for our region, water is limited, the cost of water is high, and the proper use of water an important eco-social issue. With this in mind, it begins to make sense how the concentration of certain plants planted in mass can impact the community share of water, especially in rapidly expanding cultural centers like Reno, Sparks and Carson City.

This is where our nursery comes in.  Dry Creek Garden Company is dedicated to finding the widest selection of plants that are beautiful, out of the ordinary, and perfectly suited to living in our region.

Dry Creek Gardens reflects a common sense respect for the local weather, the geology and our limited, yet ever increasing water culture. We have a deep respect for the remaining old growth topography of both the Northern Sierra and the Basin and Range. Our choice of plants is in keeping with this respect. We enjoy living here and we want to help make sure that our livelihood contributes to an appreciation and betterment of the Big and Beautiful Outside.

More than Practicality

We choose the plants we offer, not only because they are practical, but because they are interesting and beautiful to look at.
